The Arts incorporates aspects of Dance, Drama, Music, Visual and Media Arts into our PYP Units of Inquiry. Options are provided for students to participate in choir, band and private individual instrumental lessons.
Incorporating Visual Art, Dance, Drama and Music, Our Saviour has made a bold choice to focus on The Arts. Research indicates that those students who are exposed to varied opportunities in The Arts have more developed literacy skills, but our beliefs about this curriculum area extends far beyond that. For young people, personal expression and creativity come hand in hand with growing up and learning about the world. Most pre-school aged children love to sing, dance and use their bodies in all manner of ways and we believe that this exuberance and freedom should be harnessed in a school environment.
Music
At Our Saviour, we provide an opportunity for every student to enjoy, learn and grow through music. Music has many benefits for children and our students are actively involved in music at all levels.
Students’ active participation in music enhances their ability to think, learn, reason and create and we offer many opportunities for that involvement to occur, particularly for students from Years 3-7.
Private tuition is offered on site by qualified instructors who encourage children’s skill development and appreciation of music in a various forms. All students who learn an instrument are encouraged to join our own School Band whose musical talents are regularly showcased at official school functions, worship services, concerts and performances. For those students whose preferred instrument is voice, our choir provides opportunity to learn music, teamwork and performance skills in an atmosphere of fun and encouragement. Our choir performs at a variety of school functions as well as in the wider community as they visit local retirement villages and the local community centre.
Music Night is a great evening of entertainment where all students receiving instrumental tuition (either on or off campus) are invited to perform one piece. The School Band and choir also perform on this night. This is the highlight of the year for our instrumental students and one in which families look forward to attending.
The Musical
By embracing the Arts, we truly believe that we are also recognizing and unleashing the unique character of each and every child at Our Saviour.
The Musical is a focus event at the School and is held biannually. All students in the School have a role in the Musical and parents ably support our teaching staff to create what has become a premier occasion.
Our Saviour offers specialized teaching in the areas of the Arts, Physical Education and German. Our staff are well credentialed to teach in this area and students enjoy the focus these areas are given in the school.
Our Saviour Lutheran School is very fortunate to have fantastic resources including two ovals, netball court and gymnasium enabling us to have a very comprehensive Physical Education program.
Physical Education is a specialist lesson across the school. Students participate in a specialized program once a week with a physical education teacher. Class teachers also allow time for fitness activities promoting students to be active and to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others.
All students participate in 4 swimming lessons in Term 1, as well as Term 4. Placing an emphasis on Physical Education, the school often participates in extra skills based programs. Over the years these have included Hot Shot Tennis, Little Athletics, the Circus Challenge, Jump Rope for Heart, Footsteps dance program, football clinics and bicycle safety.
Our students are members of a generation who have a high degree of technological awareness and demonstrate a capacity to learn effectively and efficiently using technology. We believe it is important that schools offer students opportunities to become skilled in using tools and programs that are going to play a major role in their future learning that will support possible career options.
We endeavour to provide rich learning experiences through various types of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools, while teaching students how to be responsible digital citizens. At Our Saviour Lutheran School, teachers use media to meet different learning needs, allowing students to learn and excel at their own pace. With increased engagement, it provides so many opportunities to enhance education, changing the entire teaching model.
Our Saviour Lutheran School has a Bring Your Own Device program in place for Year 3 to Year 7. The BYOD program provides a platform for personalized education, allowing students to use their own technology in the classroom to make learning engaging and interactive. The Junior Primary classes have class sets of iPads which are also used to enhance Literacy and Numeracy learning opportunities.
Our Saviour Lutheran School also offers a state of the art computer lab with desktop Apple computers, as well as a bank of laptops for students use in classrooms. With such digital technologies at their fingertips, students can have more authority and ownership over their own learning, while promoting collaboration between peers and teachers. It provides an occasion for teaching respectful and appropriate use of mobile devices which they will be using as adults and future professionals. The whole point of education is to prepare them for the future.
